RELEASE: Trump Has Left the United States Grossly Ill-Prepared for Hurricane Season

The policy storm before (and after) the physical storm must not be ignored.

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season starts today, June 1, and runs through November 30.

Revolving Door Project Deputy Research Director Kenny Stancil released the following statement:

“As the Atlantic hurricane season begins, we’re bracing for the worst. Last year, for the first time since 2015, no hurricanes made landfall in the United States. That was fortunate considering how the Trump administration’s war on weather forecasting and disaster management know-how and capacity has turned the country into a sitting duck. At some point, possibly in the next few months, our meteorological luck is likely to shift—further exposing the deadly impacts of the White House’s cuts to the National Weather Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and more.”

“If a major hurricane strikes, Donald Trump and his right-wing accomplices will likely portray premature deaths, ruined lives, and destroyed housing and infrastructure as unavoidable effects stemming from an ‘act of God.’ But real people like Trump and Russell Vought are willingly endangering communities, so that would be a thinly veiled attempt to evade accountability for cruel policy choices that exacerbate vulnerability and harm. It’s at precisely that moment when public officials and civil society should clearly explain how the Trump regime’s actions are implicated in causing so much preventable suffering. The policy storm before (and after) the physical storm must not be ignored.”

RDP is eager to support efforts to hold the executive branch accountable for needlessly undermining our collective ability to prevent, mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from extreme weather disasters, including the catastrophic hurricane outcomes we fear are increasingly likely.
