NOAH PETERS REPRESENTED WHITE NATIONALISTS IN FREE SPEECH AND DEFAMATION CASES
- In 2018, Noah Peters represented “prominent white nationalist” Jared Taylor in a lawsuit against Twitter. Peters claimed that Twitter violated California free speech law by banning Jared Taylor. According to Twitter and the Wall Street Journal’s reporting, Taylor was banned for violating a rule that bans accounts “affiliated with groups that promote violence.” A California Superior Court judge dismissed the suit.
- Peters wrote an op-ed in the conservative Daily Caller arguing that California law prohibits Twitter from banning his client.
- In 2018, Noah Peters represented Marcus Epstein in Epstein v. Raw Story Media, accusing the publication of writing defamatory and false statements after they called him a “violent felon” and “white nationalist.” According to BuzzFeed News, Epstein previously posted to the white nationalist site VDare and entered a plea deal for assaulting a black woman. Epstein also previously worked with Jared Taylor in operating Youth for Western Civilization, and with white nationalist Richard Spencer at the Robert A. Taft Club.
- Youth for Western Civilization was a far right student group with numerous ties to white nationalists. Its founder Kevin DeAnna published articles on VDare and other white nationalist sites under pseudonyms.
PETERS REPRESENTED THE NRA IN A FIRST AMENDMENT CASE, A GOOGLE EMPLOYEE WHO ALLEGED DISCRIMINATION FOR BEING A CONSERVATIVE, AND A TWITTER USER WHO WAS BANNED FOR TRANSPHOBIA
- Noah Peters successfully represented the National Rifle Association before the Supreme Court in NRA v. Vullo. The case was a first amendment claim against Maria Vullo of New York’s Department of Financial Services who allegedly coerced banks and insurance companies to cease business with the NRA. Vullo had urged the companies to avoid doing business with the NRA in response to the Parkland high school shooting. The NRA lost the case in lower courts, but the Supreme Court vacated the lower court decision, finding that Vullo violated the first amendment.
- Peters represented a Google employee who alleged that the company punished him for being conservative.
- Peters wrote an op-ed in the Daily Caller criticizing Google’s content moderation efforts on Youtube. Peters argued that removal of videos from Info Wars’ Alex Jones, a far right conspiracy theorist best known for his legal battles with families of the Sandy Hook victims, “sets a dangerous precedent.”
- In 2019, Peters represented Meghan Murphy in a lawsuit against Twitter after the company banned Murphy’s account for transphobic posts. Murphy lost the case.
