In response to Elon Musk’s repeated claims that his “Department of Government Efficiency” has a mandate from the American public, the Executive Director of The Revolving Dorr Project, Jeff Hauser released the following statement:
“Elon Musk is not creative enough to be an evil genius – an evil mimic, sure, but not an evil genius. DOGE is merely memeified Project 2025. And President Trump was repeatedly explicit on the campaign trail – he was not running on Project 2025.”
“And while the press has done a decent job of making sure that political aficionados are aware that Trump was lying and is indeed implementing Project 2025, they have not brought that analysis over to their coverage of the far buzzier and more consequential Constitutional crisis that DOGE has created. The seizing of constitutionally appropriated money? That’s Project 2025. The war on dedicated professionals in government by ignorant random outsiders? ? That’s Project 2025. The assault on government as a way ordinary people are protected from rapacious corporations? That’s Project 2025.”
It is of critical importance to the country’s future as one governed by the rule of law that the national conversation center the giant bait and switch that Musk and Trump have executed. A presidency won by disavowing Project 2025 cannot be said to have any mandate for implementing Project 2025. Musk and Trump are not taking and running too far with a democratic mandate, but faking one. It’s up to the rest of society to call them out for not only the lawlessness, but that foundational lie.”
