Statement On Tom Emmer’s Candidacy For Speaker Of The House

In response to Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) being selected as House Republicans’ new candidate for the speakership, Revolving Door Project Executive Director Jeff Hauser issued the following statement:
“Representative Emmer represents a profound threat to American financial security. For years, the supposedly `institutionalist’ and `relatively moderate’ Emmer has been an extremist angling to demolish federal oversight of blockchain pyramid schemes. This morning, Politico’s Morning Money newsletter called Emmer “Crypto’s dream speaker.” After the past year’s run of crypto failures, including astounding revelations of rampant fraud and violations of securities law, now is the time to recognize the tremendous harms and non-existent benefits cryptocurrency has brought America.”
“Emmer has routinely threatened the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for fulfilling its legal mandate to protect investors against white collar fraudsters. The last thing we need is an extremist Speaker eager to abet the con of the decade.”
