The Trump administration’s decision to dismantle the Department of Education will leave millions of borrowers in limbo.

With rumors growing that Trump plans to sign an executive order which would effectively dismantle the Department of Education, this factsheet highlights the likely deleterious effects for millions of students across the country.

Ostensibly prestigious universities are partnering with online programs that offer non-degree courses to the tune of more than $10,000. Prominent names like Caltech, USC, and Georgetown have lent credibility to the programs, but they are little more than a scam facilitated by Obama-era deregulation.

The memos, which cover a broad range of themes, including disaster and emergency management, labor, housing, transportation, financial regulation and more, highlight the myriad ways the former president and his cast of conflicted appointees prioritized corporate interests while jeopardizing the health, safety and wellbeing of the American people.

If Jason Furman and Melissa Kearney really want to pass legislation to end the student loan system and make college affordable for all — great! What’s the plan, guys?

We are writing today to thank the Department of Education for committing to reform its practices on opposing and appealing student loan discharges in bankruptcy court. Our organizations call on the Department to immediately withdraw oppositions to individuals seeking undue hardship discharges in bankruptcy proceedings while these reforms are being implemented.

A coalition of 17 advocacy organizations called on Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to immediately withdraw his department’s opposition to student borrowers seeking to discharge their debt in bankruptcy court while the Department reviews its bankruptcy policies in a letter on Thursday.
